Move one face over from Dizzy and Miles on the Mt. Rushmore of Jazz and you’ll find distinguished CNYJO Concert Series guest Phil Woods, direct artistic descendant of the great Charlie Parker (as well as former husband to Charlie’s widow Chan Parker and stepfather to Charlie’s children) and benchmark for all aspirants to greatness on the alto saxophone. Another Juilliard grad and student of Lenny Tristano, Phil became know as “New Bird” in the 1950’s and retains that mantle to this day. Having worked for everyone in jazz for the last 50+ years, including Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, Benny Carter, Thelonius Monk, and Michel LeGrand, he is best know to jazz newcomers as the soloist on Billy Joel’s Just The Way You Are and Steely Dan’s Doctor Wu. He has led his own quintet since 1974, and has amassed an oevre of possibly hundreds of recordings. We have never seen the volume of acclaim given to any of our guests that we’ve encountered looking at Phil’s career. Since he won the 1956 Downbeat Magazine”New Star Award”, we surveyed 20 Critic’s Poll #1 listings, 7 Reader’s Poll #1 rankings, 3 Grammys, 3 Grammy nominations, a 1994 induction into the American Jazz Hall of Fame, as well as a 1989 “Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters” medal from the country of France.
