Syracuse Opera presents Puccini’s “La Boheme”

La Bohème features large replicas of Impressionist art and posters as part of the scenery; and a series of art song recitals based on works of art in the exhibit to be performed in the galleries and in the Everson Museum’s Hosmer Auditorium.

La Bohème will be performed on October 23 and 25, 2009, in the John H. Mulroy Civic Center Theaters at Oncenter. The central work in Turner to Cézanne is Renoir’s La Parisienne. The Syracuse Opera plans to recreate Renoir’s art onstage as one of Mimi’s costumes.

Adriana Zabala has created a program called “L’heure exquise”, musical impressions from Turner to Cézanne that pairs 10 works in the exhibit with art songs by Elgar, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré and Duparc set to the poetry of Verlaine, Hugo and Moréas, among others.

There will be performances both in the galleries with the actual paintings and in the Everson’s recital hall where we will project images of the paintings. The recitals will take place in mid-November, in collaboration with the Everson Museum’s exhibition schedule.

Syracuse_Opera

The purpose of Syracuse Opera is to enrich the lives of the people of Upstate New York through locally produced opera, the one all inclusive art form that celebrates the beauty of the human singing voice energized through the spectacle of live theater. Its core values are Artistic Excellence, Integrity and Community Enrichment.

Syracuse Opera is the only year-round professional opera company serving Upstate New York. The company produces three mainstage operas each season and provides year-round outreach and educational programs through the Syracuse Opera Resident Artist Program and Syracuse Opera Ensemble.

The Resident Artist Program was founded in 2008 to provide performing opportunities for emerging artists. Bernard Uzan and Diana Soviero are the Program’s artistic advisors. Resident Artists are selected from competitive national auditions and perform small roles or cover roles in mainstage productions and their own Resident Artist Productions throughout Upstate New York.

Syracuse Opera Ensemble is comprised of local artists who perform throughout the community and also serve as teaching artists.

For mainstage productions, Syracuse Opera hires the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Opera Chorus and performs in the Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater of the Mulroy Civic Center. Noted for high-quality, theatrical productions that star young singing-actors, Syracuse Opera productions have been compared favorably to those of the New York City and Glimmerglass Operas.

Each Fall more than 50 graduate and undergraduate students from the the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University canvas a small town in upstate New York, recording sound, writing stories and shooting photos and video. This year the town of choice is Skaneateles.

Photojournalism students from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications spent the weekend of Sept. 25-27 at its 11th annual Fall Workshop. Through photography, video, audio and writing, students documented life in Skaneateles.

The workshop is organized by the Department of Multimedia Photography & Design (MPD) and uses equipment loaned by Apple and Nikon. More than 100 students worked side-by-side with about 20 professional journalists from across the country, including editors from NPR, South Carolina’s Charlotte Observer, Newark, New Jersey’s Star-Ledger and AOL.
