Flying Dutchman

A Multimedia Concert Event. February 26 @ 8:00 p.m. & 28 @ 2:00 p.m.

The story: A Dutch sea captain is condemned to remain at sea until he finds true love. Every seven years, he is permitted to pursue such a love on land. One woman, Senta, hopes to save him from his watery fate.

• Sung in German with projected English titles.

• Back story: Syracuse Opera was set to present “Of Mice and Men,” by American composer Carlisle Floyd. But, in January, Wolff faced the harsh reality of the faltering economy and looked for a less risky production. “It’s not known to be a big box office,” Wolff says of “Of Mice and Men.”

She settled on Wagner’s “Flying Dutchman” partly as a cost-saver. But, Wolff also envisioned an artistic adventure. The opera will be a “multimedia concert event,” she says.

The scenery will be spare — possibly just a sail and its rigging. Video projections will complement the lighting and set. Syracuse Symphony Orchestra will be on stage and a chorus of 60, the largest ever for Syracuse Opera, will flank the musicians.

The leads will sing concert-style and in evening attire rather than a staged opera performance. This approach requires shorter rehearsals, a smaller time commitment from visiting artists and a simple set, which means lower expenses.
