Patience Brewster, Patience Brewster, Inc. is headquartered in Skaneateles, with offices in Minneapolis and San Diego. Patience has been honored with several community service and arts awards. Born and raised in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Patience received a BFA in Printmaking and Bookmaking from Philadelphia College of Art in 1974. It took two years until her first book finally appeared on the shelves in 1981. By that time she had also produced a son and was about to produce a daughter, both of whom contributed to her art work and children’s book writing. She went on to illustrate 34 books.
Later, Patience began illustrating greeting cards with various publishers. In 1999, Patience partnered with, Dept. 56, to create what would become one of their top selling lines, “Krinkles by Patience Brewster.”
The astonishing success of the ornaments encouraged her to do something she had been pondering for several years. In 2002, she convinced her husband to help her make a business plan and to help her launch her own line of greeting cards using the art from her exhibits. She hoped to create cards that would give her freedom of expression and give respect to the intellect of her audience. It has been reviewed as “whimsically humorous yet sophisticated.” The New York TIMES described her art as “Camp Victorian”.
In 2008 Patience announced that she would independently produce her own ornaments and gifts. Her objective now is to create a limited production of handmade and hand painted gifts which she has designed and personally nurtured during production.
