Fun Fact about Syracuse & Onondaga County …. did you know …..
…that originally part of the township of Marcellus, the town of Skaneateles separated and established its independence on February 26, 1830 with the village, at the north end of Skaneateles Lake, incorporating on April 19, 1833. Early agriculture in the area was centered on dairy and grain and by 1850, the village and its surrounding hamlets had begun producing wool cloth, mill machinery, carriages, sleighs, paper, bricks, ironwork and farm implements. The cultivation of the teasel, a natural burr used to raise the nap on woven wool, spurred the economy of Skaneateles until the middle of the twentieth century. Also well known canoes, motor launches and sailboats, including the Lightning and the Comet, were hand crafted in Skaneateles between 1876 and 1945.
