Fun Fact about the Syracuse area …. did you know …..

…. that the hamlet of Iona, located in the town of Van Buren, was previously named Barns’ Corners (for Phineas Barns, Jr who founded the settlement in 1803).  When the post office was established there in 1816, it was renamed Ionia, after the ancient region on the west coast of Asia Minor (Turkey).  There is also another Ionia, NY located in the town of West Bloomfield, Ontario County.
