Friday, September 2 Sunday, October 23 – Quietude:  Paintings and Drawing by Chris Baker and Harry Bliss – Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn.  This exhibition will feature two artists from the Finger Lakes region that share long standing and prolific artistic careers.  Both artists depict tranquil scenes best described as “quietude.”  Derived from the title of Harry Bliss’ painting “Quietude,” – this state of stillness or calm is reflected in outdoor landscapes, interiors, and contemplative portraits.  Suggested Admission for this exhibition is $6 adults; Members and children 12 & under are free.  www.myartcenter.org  315-255-1553

Sunday, September 17 – Sunday, November 6 – Westminster Church 150 Years – Cayuga Museum, 203 Genesee St., Auburn.  The exhibit will look at major themes and events throughout the history of the church ranging from education and outreach to the Church’s famous Tiffany window. The exhibit will also Westminster’s strong involvement in various civil rights movements:  the church was founded in 1861, when 66 abolitionist members left Second Presbyterian Church following the Rev. Henry Fowler, who was forced to leave  because of the controversy he caused by praying publicly for the soul of John Brown.The exhibit will feature objects and photographs from both the collection of the Cayuga Museum and Westminster Church.   Open Tues. – Sunday Noon – 5pm.  www.cayuganet.org/cayugamuseum  315-253-8051

Wednesday, September 21 - Dining for Women Presents “A Walk to Beautiful” – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn.  Filmed in Ethiopia, this documentary shares the inspiring stories of 3 women, rejected by their husbands, and ostracized by their communities, who leave home in search of treatment for obstetric fistula.  In a courageous attempt to reclaim their lives, these women embark on a journey and find a haven they never imagined, transforming their long and arduous trek into ’a walk to beautiful’.  6pm Wine & hors d’oeuvres reception, 7:30pm – Screening of the movie A WALK TO BEAUTIFUL.  $5, cash bar.  www.auburnpublictheater.org  315-253-6669

Thursday, September 22 - MIRABAI CEIBA – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn.  Mirabai Ceiba is a duo consisting of guitarist/singer Markus Sieber (East Germany) and singer/harpist/pianist Angelika Baumbach (Mexico). They perform a compilation of original songs in Spanish and English as well as newly arranged chants from different traditions of the world and Gurmukhi Mantras. Friday, September 23 & Saturday, September 24 - Film – “BUCK” – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn.  BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life “horse-whisperer,” he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Friday, September 23 - Auburn:  History’s Hometown Ghost Hunt – Auburn City Hall, 24 South St., Auburn.   Empire State Paranormal Research Society, ESPRS for short, will be hosting a historic tour and ghost walk called Auburn:  Hometown Ghost Hunt.  Attendees will be lead to three separate locations where ESPRS members will give them historical information about the location before holding an EVP session.  8:00pm. www.empirestateprs.com 

 

 

Friday, September 23 - 7th Annual Book Lovers’ Ball – Aurora Inn, 391 Main St., Aurora.  An elegant evening at the beautiful Aurora Inn.  Dine and dance in this lovely setting.  Special guest John C. Saturday, September 24 - Civil War History Day - Mott Parkk & the History Center, South St. Rt. 34, Cato.  Civic Heritage, celebrating its 30th year, is holding a Civil War History Day to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.  The event will feature a civil war encampment, children’s games from the 1860s, a period cooking demonstration, book signing by Anthony Gero, and chicken BBQ.  Event runs 10:00am till 4:00pm.  BBQ noon-4pm.
