Stroll, Sing and Shop During Dickens Special Events

The month of December gets under way in Skaneateles with a traditional holiday event and a new one.

On Dec. 2, the community will gather for Skaneateles Sings (formerly known as Locals Night). The celebration starts at 6 p.m. at the Skaneateles Library, with Father Christmas and Mother Goose greeting children, reading stories and posing for photos. At 6:30 p.m., the Rev. Craig Lindsey of First Presbyterian Church will dedicate the crèche in a candlelit ceremony.

The ceremony will be followed by candlelit caroling with the Dickens characters and Girl Scouts, lighting of the Christmas tree and remarks by Mayor Marty Hubbard at the Gazebo, a magic show by the Wonderful Wizard of the North at the United Methodist Church (where the Girl Scouts will serve hot chocolate and cookies), and an open house at village stores. Children who visit the United Methodist Church will receive a gift from KeyBank.

In addition, winners of the Skaneateles Journal’s coloring contest will be announced, with prizes awarded in two age groups.

Skaneateles Sings is sponsored by KeyBank and the Skaneateles Journal, and organized by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Skaneateles Garden Club.

First Friday celebrations will also take place that evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Imagine, Gallery 54, Skaneateles Artisans and Snake Oil Glassworks.

A new event—‘Tis the Season for Skaneateles Specials—will debut from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 8, replacing Ladies Night and Gents Night.

“A few hours of shopping just wasn’t enough, so the Skaneateles merchants have expanded Ladies and Gents nights to an all-day shopping extravaganza,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “Ladies, come with your girlfriends. Gents, come with the guys. Couples, come together and pick out unique gifts for each other. Then top off the day with a free drink on us!”

Anyone making a purchase that day will have the choice of a free drink from Creekside Books & Coffee, Joelle’s French Bistro, Mirbeau Inn & Spa or the Sherwood Inn.

Among the merchants offering specials are:

• Imagine – free Imagine T-shirt with $50 purchase

• Paris Flea – 20 percent off all items (through Dec. 11)

• Creekside Books & Coffee – 20 percent off all bookstore merchandise

• Johnny Angel’s $3 hamburgers (until 9 p.m.)

• Fleur de lis Florist – 20 percent off all Christmas and regular merchandise (not including fresh flowers, wreaths, kissing balls or plants); free ornament with $50 purchase

• Country Ewe – 20 percent off all regular-price apparel

• Chamber of Commerce – free Dickens ornament with any purchase

In addition, raffle tickets will be available at shops throughout the village. Prizes include an overnight stay at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, a dinner cruise on the Judge Ben Wiles, SU Basketball tickets, a gift from cate&sally and jewelry from Imagine.

The Skaneateles Press will host a “Holiday Mix & Mingle” from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sherwood Inn. And at 7 p.m., a Dickens Dinner will take place at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, this year’s presenting sponsor of Dickens Christmas. Dinner reservations are necessary and may be made by calling 315-685-5006.

‘Tis the Season is sponsored by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce and Eagle Newspapers.

“The Chamber would like to extend a special thank-you to Skaneateles resident George Haux, who provided the Christmas tree for the Gazebo, and the Skaneateles Country Club, which provided the tree for the pier,” says Dove. “We’d also like to thank the Girl Scouts for their work on the Memory Tree, and the Village electric department for its help in putting up decorations. These beautiful trees and decorations will be enjoyed by the community not only at these events, but all season long.”
