December 21 - Longest Night Service – Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St., Auburn.  The service offers a message of hope and comfort for anyone who finds the holidays difficult, due to loneliness, insecurity, loss, anxiety, or even just the stress of the season, through candlelight, hymns, special music by the Westminster Choir, and a message by Pastor Phil Windsor. December 23 – “Life in a Day” – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn.  Life in a Day brings together the most compelling footage from YouTube to create a 90-minute film crafted by Macdonald, executive producer Ridley Scott, producer Liza Marshall, and their teams. December 26 – December 30 – “Models of Strength” – Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski Sr. Educational Center, Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum, 6880 East Lake Rd., Auburn.  Come check out the brand new ’Norm Riley Wooden Toys and Farm Implement Exhibit’.  View over 300 hand crafted works of art.  11:00am – 4:00pm.  Admission & parking free, donations accepted.  315-252-7644

December 30 - Concert with John Schmitt and Jules Poorman – Auburn Public Theater,          8 Exchange St., Auburn.  John Schmitt was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, and his songs are a direct reflection of his experiences growing up there. A unique folk-meets-soul style enhances his thoughtful lyrics and colorful imagery.  Known for her beautiful voice and captivating stage presence, Jules Poorman has performed at venues throughout the state from Buffalo to New York City, including the American Folk Art Museum in Manhattan during summer 2011.  Tickets $7 at door, 8pm.  www.auburnpublictheater.org  315-253-6669

December 30 & December 31 – “The Great Buck Howard” – Auburn Public Theater,                   8 Exchange St., Auburn.  The Great Buck Howard follows the rise, fall, and rise template of many Tom Hanks productions (see That Thing You Do!), but McGinly handles a large cast with ease, the laughs are plentiful, the cameos–John Stewart, Conan O’Brien, George Takei, etc.–are a treat, and the unpredictable Malkovich gives his most nuanced performance since, well, Being John Malkovich.  Tickets $5 online, $6 at door, 12/30 – 1:00 & 8:00pm, 12/31 – 8:00pm.  www.auburnpublictheater.org  315-253-6669

December 31 - New Year’s Eve Black & White Masquerade Ball – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn.  You are cordially invited to the Auburn Public Theater for a New Year’s Evening of whimsy and elegance. Inspired by a certain writer’s Party of the Century, the event will be a soiree to remember. I encourage you to arrive in your most debonair black and white attire in order to blend in with the evening’s decorative palette. For added zest, I entreat you to don a playful mask of your choosing. December 31 – Back to the 80s New Year’s Eve 2011 – Auburn Holiday Inn, 75 North St., Auburn.  Party begins at 7:30pm with open bar & hors d’oeuvres stations.  Dinner at 8:00pm, featuring carved prime rib & honey glazed ham, shrimp, and dessert buffet.  Champagne toast at midnight.  Music by The Pop Show Band.  $240/couple includes overnight accommodations, NYE celebration, and breadfast buffet on New Year’s Day.    315-253-4531

 

December 31 - New Years Eve Celebration – Aurora Inn, 391 Main St, Aurora.  A four-course limited dinner menu, with open seating from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The celebratory dinner is part of the Inn¹s ongoing epicurean series.
