February 12^th – The Life of Harriet Tubman: A Spiritual Journey Through Music – Willard Memorial Chapel, 17 Nelson St., Auburn. The Syracuse Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (SGMWA), under the direction of Dr. Joan R. Hillsman, will present a concert of inspired African music and Negro spirituals to honor and celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman. Co-sponsored by the Harriet Tubman Boosters Club, this event will feature music composed and directed by Dr. Hillsman, and performed by members of the Syracuse Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. February 17^th & 18^th – “180 Degrees South” – Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange St., Auburn. ’Conquerors of the Useless’ follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia. Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life – and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. Jeff’s life turns when he meets up in a rainy hut with Chouinard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature – and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it. 2/10, 1 & 8pm, 2/11 8pm.
