On August 15th at 7 pm, Skaneateles will host the Great Britain Brass Band for a free concert at the Gazebo. The Great Britain Bass Band is a musical group composed of 40 talented young musicians touring the United States, and entertaining crowds as they go.  All are welcome to this outdoor concert.  Simply bring a lawn chair, or blanket or sit on one of the park benches.  This is a concert you will not want to miss.

The Band is responsible for all of their own traveling expenses, so although the concert is FREE, donations are certainly welcome.  And if you really like what you hear, you can purchase one of their CD’s after the concert is over.

An America’s Cup evening with two time Cup winner and Skaneateles lake native – Peter Isler – for the benefit of Junior Sailing on Skaneateles Lake

On August 20th, at 6:00 pm, two time America’s Cup winner Peter Isler will entertain the audience at the Skaneateles Sailing Club with stories and picture presentation from his America’s Cup career (most recently Isler was in Valencia, Spain serving as Navigator in the 2007 America’s Cup for the US team – BMW Oracle Racing) and insight into the future of the oldest trophy in sports.

Isler (who’s family has had a camp on Skaneateles Lake for three generations) won the Cup twice, serving as navigator for Dennis Connor aboard his Stars & Stripes in Australia and San Diego.  He has also covered the Cup four times for television (ESPN, Outdoor Life Network & VERSUS Network) and is the co-author of the best selling book, “Sailing For Dummies”.  College Sailor of the Year at Yale University, and one of the most respected names in the sport, Isler honed his early skills sailing Sunfish and Lasers on Skaneateles Lake.

The evening is being sponsored by The Sailboat Shop and will include a barbecue and silent auction (including some of Isler’s BMW Oracle team gear).  The cost is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for students and $30.00 per family.  All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Junior Sailing on Skaneateles Lake through three organizations: the junior sailing program of Skaneateles Sailing Club, the junior program of Skaneateles Country Club and the Skaneateles chapter of the Sea Scouts.

Skaneateles Lake has a long history in the sport of sailing, including being the birthplace of the world famous Lightning Class.  Come help support the future of Skaneateles Lake’s sailing legacy and enjoy an entertaining evening with one of the superstars in the sport of sailboat racing.

Finger Lakes Memories (Images of America) Cover

Creekside to host Michael Leavy, author of Finger Lakes Memories on Saturday, August 18th at 1:00pm.

[Skaneateles, NY] Creekside Books & Coffee, an independent bookstore and coffeehouse in Skaneateles, is honored to be hosting author Michael Leavy on Saturday, August 18th at 1:00pm in the bookstore.  Mr. Leavy will be presenting and signing copies of his book, Finger Lakes Memories.

“We are really looking forward to learning more about Mr. Leavy’s book,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee.  “Finger Lakes Memories includes spectacular photos that capture the historical significance and beauty of the Finger Lakes region which should make for a special presentation.”

About the Author

Michael Leavy, the author of eight books, brings to his writing a background of historical preservation, photography, lecturing, and Iroquois history. For Finger Lakes Memories, he received special permission to choose from the treasured Corby collection, which numbers in the thousands, as well as from other select sources. Corby took photographs of virtually everything because, in his heart, he felt so much in life was worth remembering. After seeing this book, no one will ever be able to explore the Finger Lakes region and see it in the same way again.

About Finger Lakes Memories

Finger Lakes Memories takes a long, mesmerizing look back at a land of 11 lakes, a land of monasteries and mansions, a U.S. president, abolitionists, women’s rights activists, Mark Twain, early aviation, and superb universities. Featuring the work of early-20th-century photographer George Bentley Corby, the book reflects the remarkable scenic beauty of the area before commercial and residential development. Poignant and often zestful photographs of farm labors, school chums, and small-town life emerge from a region where, like welcoming hands, the Finger Lakes beckon all to their safe solitudes, there to be inspired, comforted, educated, and encouraged. It is doubtful there is another book that so totally and vividly captures the everyday life of the era.

“Mr. Leavy’s visit is sure to be a memorable event for many who have an interest in local history.  We look forward to his informative presentation and hope many join us,” says Davis.

Creekside Books & Coffee is located at 35 Fennell Street in Skaneateles.  The bookstore is the only retail store in the village selling new hardcover and paperback books as well as toys, gifts, greeting cards and other merchandise. The coffeehouse features the freshest roasted coffee in town, a light fare menu and a pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy.
