World Class Performers, Homer New York

Center for the Arts in Homer, New York

Hello –

If you are visiting our website, it means that some part of the world of the Arts, if not all, is important to you. Whether it is the performances in the Whiting Theater or the exhibits in the Borg-Warner Morse TEC Gallery; possibly it is Cortland City Ballet or Ballroom Dancing with Bess Koval. Maybe it is the art courses or the lectures we hold, all this is under one roof and available to you.

The activities held here at the Center are countless and the possibilities of what is to come are endless, but whatever it is that brought you here says, “You care”. You care about having and keeping the Arts in your life and that, my friend, is important! For without your caring, organizations such as this cannot exist.

So, for whatever activity you choose to attend at the Center, thank you. Thank you from the Board of Directors and thank you from myself!

Oh, and by the way, you can always become a Member. There are several levels to choose from plus they come with perks!

Jazz Central NY

Each CNYJAF season consists of:
CNY Jazz Orchestra Concert Series at the Oncenter’s Carrier Theatre, featuring the CNYJO along with nationally recognized guest artists, who also conduct educational clinics while in residence.
Pascale Black History Month Cabaret Series featuring national guest artists highlighting African America’s unique contribution to our culture, presented in public performance and also in colleges across the region.
All That Jazz in-school and other public performances by a narrated educational combo that plays jazz from every decade of the 20th Century to now.
Scholastic Jazz Jam Series events where local High School and College students perform in a supportive environment backed by professionals.
In Their Own Words Cultural Legacy Speaker Series directed by Monk Rowe, curator of the Hamilton College Jazz Archive, at Jazz Central.
Jazz in the Square Festival
an international summer jazz festival at the center of downtown Syracuse that includes three outdoor stages, strolling musicians throughout the city, open on-stage master classes by guest artists, and downtown nightclub jams mixing touring musicians with regional talent.
Jazz in the City Neighborhood Outreach Concert Series featuring national and local jazz artists of color at underutilized city park locations in lower-income city neighborhoods. Talented students recruited from the Syracuse City Schools perform onstage with these professionals at each concert.
SummerJazz Workshop a one-week student improv program-in-residence at the Arts and Home Center at the NY State Fairgrounds. It features a combo-based daily curriculum of small ensemble coaching, student jams, master classes, professional performances, and a residency by a nationally known artist-educator who performs with the students in a grand finale evening performance. The students also perform a day-long youth jazz festival at the NYS Fair each August.
Stan Colella Parks and Recreation All-Star Big Band a paying summer job for seventeen students exclusively from the Syracuse City School District. This orchestra plays 55-60 concerts at important city events, nursing homes, schools, parks, and public places throughout the urban area.
In partnership with the City of Syracuse, the CNYJAF provides auditions, instruction, music directorship, library resources, recruiting and performance opportunities at the new “Jazz in the Square” festival in Clinton Square and Downtown Syracuse. The organization provides a home base for this, our “youth orchestra,” at Jazz Central in Syracuse.
Summer Festival Concerts Summer Festival Concerts held throughout the extended Central New York region in free, open-to-the-public venues. These include the Alliance Bank Jazz Under The Stars, a free summer concert on the lawn at Lorenzo Historic Mansion. These appearances aim to widen audience knowledge and provide critical exposure of the art form to general audiences.
Jazz Vespers Series
held at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in Dewitt. The services are a combination of inspirational and meditative readings, homily, and jazz played by members of the CNY Jazz Orchestra and various guest vocalists. The jazz selections are drawn from secular and sacred sources, representing a wide range of composers as varied as Duke Ellington, Chick Corea, Cole Porter, and Stephen Foster, and well-known hymns in jazz settings for all to enjoy singing as they wish.
