If you haven’t wandered around the Finger Lakes region of Central New York, you should. And take along a copy of “Routes 5 & 20” , and a Blog they feature “Dashboard Diaries” for an amazing collection of very cool things to see and places to go.

Dashboard Diaries explores what’s cool and quirky along the road between Skaneateles and Batavia, NY.

It’s written by two Central New York natives with an unflagging wanderlust—and a firm belief that some of the most interesting places are right in their own backyards.

From the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce:
Travelers of Routes 5 and 20 have a new resource at their fingertips—a blog called Dashboard Diaries. Drawing from the popular “Best of the Best” pocket map published by the Routes 5 & 20 Committee, Dashboard Diaries takes a fresh look at some of the unique eateries, activities, scenic spots, and shops that stud the highway between Skaneateles and Batavia. The new blog lives online at Routes5and20.com, a site maintained by an alliance of chambers and visitor bureaus along the road.

“What we are doing is highlighting the contemporary value of this historic road,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “There are so many interesting stories and little-known gems all along the route. We want to provide a hub for anyone interested in sharing their impressions; as well as for those seeking insider info and candid reviews.”

And while you are traveling, consider spending the night at Skaneateles Suites Collection of Places to Stay

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, bearing the name of Hammondsport’s favorite son, is located on Route 54, one half mile south of the village of Hammondsport, New York. Dedicated to the memory of pioneer aviator, Glenn Curtiss, the museum contains a priceless collection relating to early aviation and local history. The museum also features a 75-seat theater, large open area for special events and a gift shop. In addition to seeing the museum displays and exhibits, visitors are welcome to visit the Restoration Shop, talk with volunteer craftsman and watch them work on historic aircraft.

Glenn Curtiss began his career as a builder of bicycles and then, motorcycles. In 1907 he became the “fastest man on earth” when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on his V8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss motorcycles that are on display. On July 4th, 1908, Curtiss gained notoriety of a different kind when he flew his flying machine, named the “June Bug”, a distance of over 5000 feet to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America – a feat that earned him pilot’s license # 1. A full-sized reproduction of the “June Bug” is one of several historic aircraft on display.
