"We Steal Secrets"

“We Steal Secrets”

- “We Steal Secrets” – Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn.

Acclaimed documentarian Alex Gibney, takes the reins for this no-holds-barred look at one of the most unusual phenomena of early 21st century media. In 2006, an Iceland-based outfit called The Sunshine Press launched the website WikiLeaks.org. As run by Australian Internet activist Julian Assange, the site’s mandate involved regularly publishing top-secret documents and covert information, often regarding governments and their respective military operations.

As might be expected, this set off a firestorm between those who admired the organization’s bravado and resourcefulness, and those who argued, not unjustly, that the dissemination of data regarding such events as the U.S. war in Afghanistan could put untold numbers of lives at risk.

In We Steal Secrets, Gibney relays the story of the WikiLeaks website from the inside, and moves beyond black and white to penetrate a complex network of activity guided by courage and idealism but also allegedly guilty of ethical insensitivity and hypocrisy.

Tickets $5/online, $6/at the door, 12/6, 1:00 & 8:00 pm, 12/7, 8:00 pm. www.auburnpublictheater.org 315-253-6669

Usher in the Holidays With Skaneateles Sings and Shop Skaneateles

Father Christmas

Father Christmas

Two community events will complement the season-long celebration of Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles.

On Dec. 6, the community will gather for Skaneateles Sings. The program starts at 6 p.m. at the Skaneateles Library, with Father Christmas and Mother Goose greeting children, reading stories and posing for photos. At 6:30 p.m., local clergy will dedicate the crèche in a candlelit ceremony.

The ceremony will be followed by candlelit caroling with the Dickens characters and Girl Scouts, lighting of the Christmas tree and remarks by Mayor Marty Hubbard at the Gazebo, a magic show by the Wonderful Wizard of the North at the United Methodist Church (where the Girl Scouts will serve donuts and cider), and an open house at village stores. Children who visit the United Methodist Church will receive a gift from KeyBank.

Skaneateles Sings is sponsored by KeyBank and the Skaneateles Journal, and organized by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Skaneateles Garden Club.

First Friday art openings and exhibitions will also take place that evening throughout the village.

During Shop Skaneateles, Dec. 10, visitors are invited to shop throughout the day and Shop, Sip and Stroll from 5 to 8 p.m.

Many village shops will offer 20th anniversary specials, free gift-wrapping and refreshments. In the evening, parking will be free village-wide.

“Bring your friends, enjoy our small-town holiday charm and find that perfect gift—then top off the evening with a drink on us,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce.

Among the merchants offering specials are:

• Imagine (also celebrating its 20th anniversary) – 20 percent off all Christmas ornaments

• Creekside Books & Coffee – 20 percent off all store merchandise and a complimentary beer or glass of wine with purchase of $25 or more

• Rhubarb – savings and specials on Swiss Diamond Cookware, Wusthof Cutlery and Cuisinart, plus sampling of gourmet dips

• Gallery 54 – 20 percent off candles, soaps and Better Brittle

• Infused! – sampling of specialty products

• Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce – 20 percent off everything except gift certificates

For more specials, go to http://www.skaneateles.com.

Dickens Raffle tickets will be available at shops throughout the village, at $5 each, three for $10, 10 for $20. Prizes are a $1,000 gift certificate from Mirbeau Inn & Spa, a family membership to the Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center, a shop-and-dine Skaneateles gift basket, a gift basket from Infused! and tickets to an SU Men’s Basketball game.

Anyone making a purchase that evening will have the choice of a free drink from Creekside Books & Coffee, Joelle’s French Bistro, LakeHouse Pub or the Sherwood Inn (restrictions apply).

Shop Skaneateles is sponsored by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chamber would like to extend a special thank-you to Strawberry Fields, which donated the Christmas tree for the Gazebo,” says Dove. “We’d also like to thank the village and town for their financial support of the decorations, and the Village Electric Department for its help in putting up the decorations. They will be enjoyed by the community all season long.”
