Bird   watching has attracted much attention in recent years as an environmentally   friendly way of producing more visitor spending. Bird-watchers normally spend   the early morning hours bird watching and then have the rest of the day to   shop, dine, and visit attractions, creating a great deal of visitor spending   revenue. With this in mind, the Cayuga County Office of Tourism has developed   a new brochure to help visitors find the birding ‘hot spots’ around the   County. The brochure will be launched with the showing of “The Big   Year” at Auburn Public Theater at the 8 p.m. screenings on October 18   and 19. The first 25 people each night will receive FREE ‘For the Birds’ caps   compliments of the Tourism Office and all attendees will be given coupons   provided by Cedar Craft Wild Bird Center. “The Big Year” is the   story of three fanatical bird-watchers (Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jack   Black) and how they spend an entire year competing to spot the highest number   of species. Tickets are $5 in advance, $6 at the door. Join us for a night of   bird -brain fun!

Fun Fact about the Syracuse area …did you know……that auto racing and motorcycle racing came to the NYS Fairgrounds in the early 1900’s when such renowned names as Barney Oldfield, Ralph DePalma and Wilbur Shaw brought their speedy autos to town to race around the oval dirt track at breathtaking speeds approaching 60 miles per hour.  Through the years, auto racing has been a staple at the NYS Fair, from the Indianapolis-style racing that featured many of the biggest stars on that circuit half a century ago, to the present day stock car racing.   Beyond the NYS Fair, racing continues at this venue.  In 1972, DIRT Week was formed bringing Big-Block Modified cars to the oval track at the Fairgrounds.   This year marks year 42 for “racing’s biggest party” … DIRT Week! … running from October 9 through October 13, 2013 at the Empire Expo Center/NYS Fairgrounds.

Please find this week’s edition of the Friday Facts here.

For details on any of these events or others in our area, take a look at our website www.VisitSyracuse.org.
