Usher in the Holidays With Skaneateles Sings, Ladies’ Night   Two community events will complement the season-long celebration of Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles. On Nov. 30, the community will gather for Skaneateles Sings (formerly known as Locals Night). The program starts at 6 p.m. at the Skaneateles Library, with Father Christmas and Mother Goose greeting children, reading stories and posing for photos. At 6:30 p.m., local clergy will dedicate the crèche in a candlelit ceremony.   The ceremony will be followed by candlelit caroling with the Dickens characters and Girl Scouts, lighting of the Christmas tree and remarks by Mayor Marty Hubbard at the Gazebo, a magic show by the Wonderful Wizard of the North at the United Methodist Church (where the Girl Scouts will serve donuts and cider), and an open house at village stores. Children who visit the United Methodist Church will receive a gift from KeyBank.   In addition, winners of the Skaneateles Journal’s coloring contest will be announced, with prizes awarded in two age groups.   Skaneateles Sings is sponsored by KeyBank and the Skaneateles Journal, and organized by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Skaneateles Garden Club.   Ladies’ Night…Shop, Sip and Stroll will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11.   “We invite ladies from all over to join us—we’ve planned a great girls’ night out,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “Many of the 70-plus shops in the village will offer specials and refreshments. Bring your friends, enjoy our small-town holiday charm, and find that perfect gift. Then top off the evening with a drink on us.”   Anyone making a purchase that evening will have the choice of a free drink from Creekside Books & Coffee, Joelle’s French Bistro, LakeHouse Pub, Mirbeau Inn & Spa or the Sherwood Inn (restrictions apply).   Among the merchants offering specials are:   • Rhubarb – free gift-wrapping, demos and tastings.   • Imagine – free ceramic snowflake with purchase of $50 or more.   • Snake Oil Glassworks – free Christmas ornament with purchase of $75 or more.   • Gallery 54 – small gift with purchase of $75 or more.   • Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce – free Dickens ornament with any purchase (including Skaneateles gift certificates). Dickens Raffle tickets will be available at shops throughout the village, at $5 each, three for $10, 10 for $20. Prizes include gift certificates from Mirbeau Inn & Spa, a family membership to the Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center, jewelry from Imagine, tickets to an SU Men’s Basketball game, and tickets to “The Sound of Christmas,” featuring Elisabeth von Trapp.   Adding to the merriment, Melissa Midgley from Sunny 102 will broadcast live from village shops.   Ladies’ Night is sponsored by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce.   “The Chamber would like to extend a special thank-you to Lew and Dawn Allyn, who provided the Christmas trees for the Gazebo and the pier,” says Dove. “We’d also like to thank the village electric department for its help in putting up decorations. These beautiful trees and decorations will be enjoyed by the community all season long.”

Maps provide us with information about what’s around us and who we are. You Are Here! is an exhibit of maps from the Museum’s collection which chronicle the development of New York, Cayuga County and the City of Auburn. These maps show how our understanding of the world around us has changed over the past 400 years.  Admission free, suggested donation $3, Tue-Sun, Noon – 5:00 pm .  www.cayugamuseum.org  315-253-8051

Oct. 28th – Jan. 6th – Quilts=Art=Quilts – Schweinfurth Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn.  Quilts=Art=Quilts is the Schweinfurth Art Center’s 32nd annual juried quilt exhibition. The Art Center has long recognized the importance of quilts as a visual medium, and has been presenting quilts in an art gallery setting since 1981.  General admission $6, Tues. – Sat. 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Sun. 1:00 – 5:00 pm.   www.myartcenter.org  315-255-1553

Nov. 16th & 17th - GAMES – A romantic COMPLICATED like/crush LOVE story SAGA – Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn.  The Drawing Board Theatre Project presents an Original Play written and directed by Rachel Carrozziere.  The ageless question continues to baffle us today: Is there such a thing as true love? Love stories have dominated theater from the beginning. Why have myths and fairytales about valiant heroes who rescue princesses trapped in towers, stood the test of time? Despite our vast differences, there is an undeniable force that draws us together. This play challenges us to laugh at ourselves, our obscured ideas of relationships, and how things ‘should’ be. Through the process of producing this play, I have concluded one thing: love is what it always has been, a mystery. There is no right or wrong way to define it. In fact, it is its intrigue that entices us, and its power to scale any obstacle that makes love the miracle that it is. $15/at the door; $10/advance, 11/16 8:00 pm, 11/17 5:00 & 8:00 pm. www.auburnpublictheater.org  315-253-6669

Nov.16th & 17th – Sleepwalk With Me – Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn.  Comedian Mike Birbiglia has long been mining his life and personal foibles for material in his stand-up act, creating a persona that’s self-effacing, sweet and silly. In 2008, he reconfigured elements from his act and from his life together to create the one-man show Sleepwalk With Me, which went on to become a book in 2011, and later a narrative film that took Sundance by storm last winter.
