Cobblestone Architecture in New York

Cobblestone Architecture

Before the Civil War, pioneers pushed west across New York State. They were hard working, industrious and resourceful people who made the most of what they found. And, what they found were rounded stones or cobblestones left on the land by glaciers long ago. Wood could be shipped away on the Erie Canal and sold as a product and bricks were expensive, so the pioneers used cobblestones as their building material. They created an art form that was short lived, but what they created endures to this day.

Just north of Skaneateles, in a loop through Weedsport, Cato and Elbridge you can drive or ride a bicycle to see 13 of these historic cobblestone structures. This tour and 16 other self-guided cobblestone tours can be found in “Cobblestone Quest – Road Tours of New York’s Historic Buildings,” www.footprintpress.com, 1-800-431-1579. On the tour you’ll see a tombstone marker, a burial vault, a school, a barn and houses all built with cobblestones by the pioneers. From the guidebook you’ll learn all about this lost art form and the history of the structures you visit.

In the Shadow of the Cross
Creekside to host Charles L. Bailey, author of In the Shadow of the Cross

[Skaneateles, NY] Creekside Books & Coffee, an independent bookstore and coffeehouse in Skaneateles, is honored to be hosting author Charles L. Bailey on Saturday, June 30th at 1 pm in the bookstore. Mr. Bailey will be discussing his book, In the Shadow of the Cross: The True Account of My Childhood Sexual and Ritual Abuse at the Hands of a Roman Catholic Priest.

“We are happy to be hosting Mr. Bailey. His terrifying but inspiring story is one of hope and we look forward to hearing him read from In the Shadow of the Cross,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee.

About the Author

Charles L. Bailey, Jr. is a husband, father of four, and grandfather of eight. He was born in and continues to reside in Upstate New York. He is a SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) leader, and a guest speaker for several organizations, including Voice of the Faithful, Call to Action, and Coalition of Concerned Catholics. Mr. Bailey is an activist for support of victims and has helped to bring the issue to the attention of New York State politicians who have passed a child sex abuse bill passed in the NYS Assemby.

About In the Shadow of the Cross

In this shocking true story, a childhood victim of sexual abuse from a Catholic priest struggles to recover from his past and becomes an advocate for other victims. In a matter of seconds, author Charles L. Bailey, Jr.’s childhood innocence was destroyed. At the tender age of ten, Bailey became a victim of continuous sexual abuse by his family’s Roman Catholic priest.

In the Shadow of the Cross: The True Account of My Childhood Sexual and Ritual Abuse at the Hands of a Roman Catholic Priest details Bailey’s personal journey of recovery. With candid and shocking details, Bailey reveals how his ill-treatment forever destroyed his innocence and robbed him of identity and faith. But there is also hope in Bailey’s story. Through his work with support groups, such as SNAP, (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), individual counseling, and his renewed faith in God, Bailey has confronted his past and has become an advocate for those impacted by clergy sexual abuse. In the Shadow of the Cross shares his compelling true story and serves as a stark reminder of the haunting legacy of abuse in the church.

“In the Shadow of the Cross is the story of how one man triumphed after childhood abuse. I hope many join us to celebrate the author and this book of recovery and hope,” says Davis.

Creekside Books & Coffee is located at 35 Fennell Street in Skaneateles. The bookstore is the only retail store in the village selling new hardcover and paperback books as well as toys, gifts, greeting cards and other merchandise. The coffeehouse features the freshest roasted coffee in town, a light fare menu and a pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy.
