Stephen Ryan is a career professional graphic artist who enjoys the Exhilarating challenge of impressionistic, wet-to-wet watercolors. “The paints take you where they want to go -it’s a constant adventure.” “I’ve always painted people, because, what makes us interesting is how different we all are. There is so much more we can read into a person and situation. The best part, however, is being able to hear what people take away, as an impression, when they view my art. It’s as different as the subjects I paint” He runs his own Graphic Design Studio in Skaneateles, NY and is an Adjunct Professor of Art at SUNY OCC, teaching Computer Graphics and Advanced Graphic Design. He is also a Signature Member of The Central New York Watercolor Society. In the past year he has had shows at: KEVIN ON STEVE’S WORK “Steve is an insightful person and Molly and I enjoy the emotion that he brings into evidence when he paints his subjects. It’s somewhat like listening to the music itself. Jazz will often make me feel hip while chamber music will leave me a little contemplative. Steve’s work does the same for me. His piece titled Piano Lesson takes me and I smell the dust on top of the piano and feel the crinkle of the fresh shirt mom pressed for me when I went to my own musical challenges (I was not very good). It’s truly wonderful work and we can’t wait to show it to our community here.” THE PAINTINGS The work is impressionistic, wet-to-wet watercolors. It’s painted on Crescent Textured Illustration Board. The board and paints are wetted repetitively and some areas are defined later with Pastel Conte Pencil. Subjects include musicians, both children and adults, in the jazz as well as the classical genre.
