More Shotwell Cottage
It is an escape, pure and simple. Or, if you wish, it may be a “retreat” – back to an earlier time, where you can slow your pace to a halt. Where in spring, summer, and glorious fall you can enjoy the lake and its surroundings without interruption. Sure, cable and internet are here. But we suggest that you lower their voices, and keep them in their place. Whatever the season, let your true host – the clear, sparkling, Skaneateles Lake – speak to you. No question, it will refresh your soul.
Shotwell Cottage and Guest Cabin sit on the west side of Skaneateles Lake, only two miles from the village of Skaneateles. The gray, shingled buildings are flanked by lawns to east and west, and bordered by tall, silent pines and hardwood trees that offer both beauty and privacy. Built before world War II, Shotwell evokes New England, Nantucket even. Despite renovations, the place remains unpretentious, with old school charm. It has the elegant stamp of its owner for many years. She was an author of children’s books. Each morning the large screen porch overlooking lawn and lake brings in the sun. Some good, timeless writing happened on that sunny porch. It and the inner rooms remain calm, peaceful places to this day.
Fronting Shotwell Cottage is its east lawn, which runs nearly flat (just 10 feet of stairs) to 100 feet of lakefront and Shotwell’s permanent deck and dock. Sitting, snoozing, swimming, boating – the emblems of a good vacation are here for the taking. A five burner gas grill lets you cook lakeside.
With its four bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen, and a washer/dryer, the secluded Shotwell complex is indeed an escape from one real world into another. The cottage can play quiet host to one family or with its adjoining cabin, to more family and friends. Use it at day’s beginning and end as you sample the many pleasures of Skaneateles and the surrounding Finger Lakes region. Or, with the pull of the lake, just stay put at Shotwell and let it take hold. We know you will enjoy the experience.
