Beginning August 30, Schweinfurth Art Center’s main gallery will feature recent paintings by Stephen Achimore of Fayetteville, New York. The exhibit, Enabling Resistance, will showcase artwork completed by Achimore from 2010 to 2014.

Abstract in nature, Achimore’s paintings incorporate vivid colors and strong lines. “The expressive potency of color has always been my primary interest,” says Achimore. “My new paintings are based on the use of high-relief drawing as a support to carry color. The motif is evocative of structures I see in nature and sustains itself (graphically) under any number of applied glazes.”

Achimore works often on a large scale, and many of the paintings in the exhibit measure eight feet in height or width. Painting on the floor in his Syracuse studio, Achimore uses handmade tools to apply what are often many layers of paint.

A second exhibit, Explorations, will be held in Gallery Julius, with artwork by Barbara Delmonico of Skaneateles. Delmonico’s paintings include primarily pastels and some acrylics, many of which feature local scenes and landscapes. “Painting, for me, is about constant explorations. It is an honor, a privilege, a struggle, and most often, pure joy,” says Delmonico.

The opening reception will be held from 5-8pm on September 5, as part of Auburn’s 1st Friday events. The reception will include live piano music with Joel Morehouse and refreshments. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Closed Mondays and major holidays.
