David Bromberg and Angel Band performs in Central New York

5/09/09 8pm

Brombergs live show remains as unique as ever. Concerts by David and his band are extraordinary events, and performances follow no set pattern of selection. Give and take between performer and audience is complete, spontaneous, and totally sincere. As the NY Times noted. He has such control of his audience that he can, at one moment, hold it in his hand with a tender, touching yet funny anecdotal song, and then set it romping and stomping with a raucous bit of raunch. He is electrifying.

A singular performer/writer/arranger, Bromberg?s remarkable musical versatility and innovative resourcefulness have earned vast critical and popular acclaim. He is also impossible to classify: As one critic perceptively wrote, ?David Bromberg fits no pigeonholes. He is part of everything contemporarily musical. He is a product of blues, country, jazz, folk, and classical music. From his early success as a guitar virtuoso, Mr. Bromberg has developed into a brilliant entertainer.

Frank Vignola is considered by many to be among the top ranked guitarists on the music scene today. An extremely versatile jazz guitarist, Frank Vignola has demonstrated that he is capable of playing everything from fusion and commercial pop-jazz to hard bop, post-bop, and swing. Frank performs and/or records with such varied artists as Chet Atkins, Madonna, Jon Faddis, Woody Allen, Ringo Starr, Manhattan Transfer, Frank Wess, Elvin Jones, Lionel Hampton and countless legends from the golden age of jazz; he is currently the guitarist with the David Grisman Quintet.

For more than half a century, John “Bucky” Pizzarelli has been a part of the fraternity of musicians who have kept mainstream and traditional jazz alive. For many years, at NBC, he played in the Doc Severinson Band on the Tonight Show. One of the era’s most solid rhythm players, Pizzarelli is in high demand to provide propulsion and background for other musicians. He played and toured with Benny Goodman, forming a close association with him that lasted until Goodman’s death; he also led his own trio and recorded duos with Zoot Sims (1976), Bud Freeman (1975), and Stephane Grappelli (1979).

This will be an evening of Franco-American Swing and the reviews are unanimous from audiences, colleagues and press – the performances are simply exhilarating! The combination of Jorgenson’s phenomenal musicianship and engaging personality bring this elegant music to life for audiences of all ages. Inspired by the music created in the 1930’s by legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhart, Jorgenson brings his own flair to the stage with amazing fretwork and searing clarinet playing all the while supported by some of the best musicians in the world.

The John Jorgenson Quintet features guitarist John Jorgenson, a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, the Hellecasters, and six-year member of Elton John’s band. Artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to Bonnie Raitt to Earl Scruggs have sought out Jorgenson’s guitar work. Recently, John Jorgenson was chosen to portray Django Reinhardt in the feature film Head in the Clouds.

At a John Jorgenson Quintet performance, audiences are amazed by John’s dazzling guitar work as well as his mastery as a clarinet player and vocalist. Whether playing his own accessible compositions or classic standards, John and his band make music that is equally romantic and ecstatic, played with virtuosity and soul.

John Jorgenson is known as one of the pioneers of the American gypsy jazz movement. He has performed as a solo artist as well as collaborated with other musicians all over the world. His articles and lessons on gypsy jazz have appeared in prominent guitar magazines and he has given master classes around the country. He has performed with some of the most respected European proponents of this style, Bireli Lagrene and Romane. His playing has been included on a CD with Babik Reinhardt and Jimmy Rosenberg, and on another featuring Angelo Debarre and Moreno. In 1988 Curb Records released Jorgenson’s “After You’ve Gone” CD, a collection of Reinhardt- and Goodman-styled 30’s swing, featuring guest artists Darol Anger and David Grisman.

Show Starts at 8:00pm, Desserts, Wine & Beer at 7:00pm
Tickets: $25, Seniors $20, Children under 14 & students with I.D. are FREE.
