Set on a hill overlooking Auburn, this site was used for burial mounds by Native Americans as early as 1100 A.D. It includes the burial sites of William Seward, Harriet Tubman, Martha Coffin Wright, Col. Myles Keogh who fought with Gen. Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and a monument to Indian orator Chief Logan.  The Fort Hill Walking Tour pamphlet is available for printing.

Please join historian and guide Laurel Auchampaugh for a fascinating tour of the beautiful wooded Fort Hill Cemetery overlooking downtown Auburn. Its hilltop location, fortified many centuries ago by the mysterious mound building peoples of North America, later was reputed to be the site of an important Cayuga council seat and village.

In 1852 the hilltop was dedicated for its current function; it remains an active cemetery today. On the tour you will learn about the lives of several eminent citizens who are buried there, including the man first buried here, Judge Elijah Miller, his famous son-in-law William H. Seward, his daughter and granddaughter. Elsewhere in the cemetery, pay your respects to abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman, to members of the Osborne, Willard, and Case families, and to many others who contributed to America’s story. Take a tour of the gothic stone Bradley Chapel, and learn the story of a 50 foot tall obelisk inscribed, “Who Mourns for Logan?” In the event of rain, the talk will take place inside the Bradley Chapel.

Tickets for the tour are $10 for adults, $5 for students. These may be purchased at the time of the tour, or in advance at the Willard Chapel, 17 Nelson Street in Auburn during office business hours Tuesdays through Fridays, 10am-4pm. Call 315-252-0339 for more information. This tour is sponsored by the Community Preservation Committee. Proceeds benefit the Fort Hill Cemetery and the Willard Chapel.
