The Great Race in Auburn, New York, also known as the Captain Myles Keogh Paddle, Wheel, & Run, will mark its 32nd year in 2009. Five distinct Run, Bike, and Paddle (either canoe or kayak) Team Triathlon Relay races will begin at 9:30 A.M. on the second Sunday of August at Emerson Park, on Owasco Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region.
The feature event, also known as the Traditional Canoe Race, is a relay of 4 person teams. It begins with a 10k run on county roads and the streets of Auburn. After finishing, runners hand off to their cycling teammate who then completes a course of about 19 challenging miles on country (all paved) roads. The cyclist then hands off to one canoe teammate who runs to the beach at Auburn’s Emerson Park (about 400 yards) where his canoe and canoe partner await. The canoers then complete an out and back 4 mile sprint course on Owasco Lake to try to earn the coveted title of Great Race Champion.
The Traditional Race is joined by the newer, popular Short Canoe Race, where 4 person teams compete similarly with a 5k run, 10 mile bike, and 2 mile canoe . We also include a Tandem race, for two person teams, on the Traditional Course only (Sorry, this is a team race. There is no solo division).

Also, there are kayak team races on both the Short and Traditional courses consisting of 3 person teams (runner, biker, 1 kayaker). Although all teams race together, the kayak and canoe teams are scored separately in their own divisions.
Each year the Great Race attracts participants of all ages and abilities, from elite athletes to people for whom the Great Race is the only event they do. We cater to every level of athlete.

Following the race, the annual post race Capt. Myles Keogh Celebration is a much anticipated area summer event. (1) All racers and volunteers are treated to a complimentary lunch, wholesome refreshments and an entertaining live band all within the setting of beautiful Emerson Park. Along with the racers, many area spectators and “summer fun enthusiasts” are always on hand to join in the fun. Each year we strive to make race day a memorable, fun experience that will keep people coming back year after year.
