Auburn, New York Veteran’s Memorial Park

Following the November 11, 2007, Veteran’s Day events at Memorial City Hall, State Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Gary Finch presented the Veterans Memorial Park Committee with a grant of $100,000 which enabled construction in the Pomeroy Park area, with the blessing of the City of Auburn.

April 3, 2008 saw the placement of a steel arch emblazoned with the words “Veterans Memorial Park,” which was designed by students at Auburn High School. This entrance is adjacent to monuments honoring World War I, World War II, and Korean War veterans. In total, the Park honors veterans from Cayuga County from the Revolutionary War to the present with memorials, pavers engraved with the names of veterans, memorial benches, landscaped plantings and flags.

Students from East Middle School researched battles from each war that are featured on the memorial stones lining the main walkway. Liverpool masonry apprentice students repaired a stone wall that was built in the 1950s. John Barwinczok, Park Committee Chairman, knew it is important to involve area youth in the project. Barwinczok shared, “If they have a hand in creating the memorial, then they will respect it.”

In mid June the City celebrated the dedication of Veterans Memorial Park with a touching ceremony giving recognition of everyone who had contributed to the completion of the Park. The project was truly a community effort demonstrating respect for every life that was given by our residents, in service to this country. Please enjoy the solitude and beauty of this park.

Veterans Memorial Park is an ever-evolving memorial. Contributions and memorials may be arranged by contacting John Barwinczok at (315) 253-6022.

The Park is located on Genesee Street, between the Cayuga County Office Building and Seymour Library and across the street from Sts. Peter and John Episcopal Church and the Auburn Family Restaurant.
