Creekside to host poetry reading to include three award-winning regional poets on Thursday, June 18th at 7:30 in the coffeehouse.

[Skaneateles, NY] Creekside Books & Coffee, an independent bookstore and coffeehouse in Skaneateles, is honored to be hosting local poets Martin Walls, Karen Swenson and Phil Memmer on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 at 7:30 in the coffeehouse. These award winning poets will be reading from recently published books of poetry and will be available to sign their new releases after the reading.

“Our poetry readings in the coffeehouse offer an intimate and relaxed setting to enjoy the amazing work of award winning poets from our area,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee. “And the introduction of Creekside’s new wine and appetizer menu is sure to enhance the experience!”

About the Poets

Martin Walls
A native of Brighton, England, Martin Walls is the author of three books of poems, including most recently The Solvay Process (Tiger Bark Press, 2009). A Witter Bynner Poetry Fellow of the Library of Congress, elected to that position by former Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, Walls’ poems have appeared in FIELD, The Nation, Commonweal, The Gettysburg Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Five Points, Stone Canoe, and elsewhere. Other poetry awards include a The Nation/”Discovery” award and a Breadloaf Writers’ Conference scholarship. His collaboration with photographer Philip MacCabe can be viewed online at smallhumandetail.com. Walls is also the communications manager of the Syracuse Center of Excellence (syracusecoe.org).

Karen Swenson
Karen Swenson’s five books of poems span a period of 35 years. Her first book was published by Doubleday when that sort of thing happened. Her middle books were published by Copper Canyon Press and her most recent by the happily burgeoning new press, Tiger Bark. The last has been published by THE NEW YORKER, SATURDAY REVIEW and most of the notable literary magazines. She has taught all over the country as Poet-in-Residence and most recently at Barnard College in New York.

Philip Memmer
Philip Memmer is the author of three books of poems, including his newest release, Lucifer, Hagiography, as well as three chapbooks of poetry. His work has appeared in such journals as Poetry, Poetry Northwest, Tar River Poetry and Epoch, and in several anthologies, including 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. He is Associate Editor for Tiger Bark Press, and the founder and director of the Downtown Writer’s Center, the Syracuse affiliate of the YMCA National Writer’s Voice. He lives in the rural village of Deansboro, New York, with his wife and two children.

Creekside Books & Coffee is located at 35 Fennell Street in Skaneateles. The bookstore is the only retail store in the village selling new hardcover and paperback books as well as toys, gifts, greeting cards and other merchandise. The coffeehouse features the freshest roasted coffee in town, a light fare menu and a pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy.

BUTTERNUTS FOR REXFORD A Reading and Book Signing of the new children’s book
Sun December 14, 2008 at 3pm FREE
BUTTERNUTS FOR REXFORD
By Auburn author Tom Adessa

Special guest readers include Gary Finch with raffles for the kids with a portion donated to Literacy Volunteers

The book is written, edited, illustrated, printed and will be distributed by individuals who reside in New York State. This Tom’s first book of a series, the illustrations were done by a 18 year old Senior from Vestal High School, his first book also. The distributor is North Country Books, from Utica, who handle The Adirondack Kids series. Editorial assistance by Robert Comenole of Skaneateles.

When he was 12 years old, author Tom Adessa, of Auburn, found a baby squirrel that had fallen from its nest. He fed it with a doll bottle, according to a veterinarian’s instructions, and hand raised it.

That experience may well have planted the seeds for his first book, a children’s story called “Butternuts for Rexford.”

The book tells the story of a young squirrel that fell from the nest and as a result of the fall is afraid of heights. http://www.syracuse.com/cayuga/index.ssf?/base/news-14/122881650583371.xml&coll=1
