First Friday Returns to Skaneateles….Charles Dickens Does,  Too!

First Fridays in Skaneateles return May 4, with art openings, entertainment, expanded hours and specials, and a celebration in honor of Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday.

Dickens (aka Jim Greene) will be on hand for the festivities, which run from 6 to 9 p.m. throughout the village. Birthday cake will be served in the alcove of Dr. Rob Kiltz’s property at 42 E. Genesee St. starting at 6:30 p.m.

Participating shops will fly First Friday flags outside their establishments. Maps of participating shops will be available at all venues.

“We invite everyone to join us for this grand kick-off celebration,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “After visiting your favorite shop or gallery, stop by some of the others, where you’ll discover new offerings and see why First Friday truly has become a ‘May to December romance with Skaneateles.’ We’ll have lots of surprises throughout the season, including an ongoing celebration of Dickens’ 200th birthday.”

Art openings May 4 will be held at:

• Imagine, 38 E. Genesee St., which will feature handmade puppets, playful clocks and other crafts for children in the exhibition “For the Child in All of Us.”

• Skaneateles Artisans, 3 Fennell St. (under the Old Stone Mill), which will have an “Arty Party,” featuring a selection of newly handcrafted work.

• Gallery 54, 54 E. Genesee St., which will feature stained-glass garden art by Liz and Rich Micho and carved stoneware lanterns by Lauren Ritchie in the exhibition “Garden Art in Glass and Clay.”

• Snake Oil Glassworks, 4251 Jordan Road, which will feature acrylic and mixed media paintings, jewelry and textiles by Manlius artist Alison Fisher.

Also open late will be 1st National Gifts, Creekside Books & Coffee, Finger Lakes Photography, Fleur-de-lis Florist, Hobby House Toys, Mid-Lakes Navigation, Paris Flea (which will host artist Joyce Bond Backus), Rhubarb, Roland’s, The Country Ewe, The Irish Store (which will host harpist Lacy Lee) and the Village Bottle Shop (which will host a wine-tasting).

In search of dinner? Check out Joe’s Pasta Garage, Johnny Angel’s, Rosalie’s Cucina or the Sherwood Inn.
