Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to announce the appointment of Mary
Kate Hartmann as its new Executive Director. Hartmann will officially begin her new role on May 6th,
2013. The Board of Directors at Baltimore Woods began their comprehensive search for a new leader in
2012 when the current head, Patty Weisse, announced her retirement after 14 years of dedicated service.
Hartmann’s appointment was approved by the Board of Directors on March 26, 2013.
The
Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center recently held a victory celebration for the successful
completion of its annual community support campaign. Over 50 volunteer campaigners were thanked for
their wonderful efforts. The Y raises dollars every spring to underwrite its central tenet of providing
services to all, regardless of economic condition. More than $40,000 was raised, far surpassing the goal
of $30,000. Special thanks go to Lynne Jones and Margaret Usdansky, and their families, for their superb
leadership in bringing the campaign to a successful conclusion. Their good work and that of all of the
volunteers ensures that Y services remain available to everyone. A special thank you goes also to the
many individuals and businesses whose generous contributions put us over the top. Supporting the
scholarship campaign is a wonderful way to give back to your community. All of you have indeed made a
difference.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County
is looking for volunteers to sign-up for our CommuniTree Steward
program. Community members looking for a hands-on education and technical experience in urban tree management
are invited. This volunteer service-based program offers FREE training in tree biology, tree identification, and planting
and maintenance for young trees. Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) training, including in-depth ash tree identification, EAB
detection and monitoring, are included in the course curriculum.
Training sessions for new CommuniTree Stewards will start on May 1st at 6 PM. The deadline to sign-up is April 24th.

Search for Night on a Planet that Never Sleeps – A film by Ian Cheney. Sustainable Skaneateles
will present this film about the loss of the night sky and how to get it back as a follow-up to their
very successful Earth Hour events. This sometimes humorous documentary follows the
filmmaker as he moves to NYC after growing up in rural Maine and asks a simple question, “Do
we need the stars?” Along the way we hear from Neil deGrass Tyson, Ann Druyan and a host of
others describing the spiritual and intellectual loss as well as the health effects of too much
artificial light at night and what we can do to correct it. The film is about an hour and a half, and
a discussion will follow.

program. Community members looking for a hands-on education and technical experience in urban tree management
are invited. This volunteer service-based program offers FREE training in tree biology, tree identification, and planting
and maintenance for young trees. Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) training, including in-depth ash tree identification, EAB
detection and monitoring, are included in the course curriculum.

Mar. 16th – Make your own Rain Barrel Workshop – Sterling Nature Center, 15730 Jenzvolt Rd., Sterling. Convert a 55 gallon barrel into a rain barrel to capture rain water for use in your landscape. Rain barrels harvest rain water which can then be used to irrigate landscape plants. Mar. 17th – Irish Harp Concert – Willard Memorial Chapel, 17 Nelson St., Auburn. Harpist Lisa Craig Fenwick will present an Irish Music Concert. Lisa performs throughout the Finger Lakes and the US and teaches harp to students of all ages. She has recently performed for the Cortland Music Festival, Tioga County Council on the Arts and Tully, Hornell, Canisteo and Howard Libraries as well as Kendall, Bridges and Alterra House in Ithaca. She is currently the Harpist for the Ithaca Community Orchestra. In addition to Lisa’s solo pedal harp pieces, Lisa will be joined for a portion of the concert by her sons David Fenwick, cello and Jonathan Fenwick, violin. David is a freshman at the Ithaca College School of Music. Jonathan is a high school freshman and is concert master for the Ithaca Community Orchestra. Both David and Jonathan have been playing since age 4. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day the concert will include a great deal of Irish music, but the audience will also be treated to a bit of classical and other Celtic music as well. Charles Loring Elliott (1812-1868) was one of the most prominent American portrait painters of
the 19th century. His works hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery in
Washington, D.C., the Everson Museum in Syracuse – and in the Skaneateles Library, where nine
are on display. Visitors to the library often ask about these portraits. Who are they? Now,
thanks to research by Sally Holbien, these former Skaneateles residents have been identified.
Dannette Davis, librarian at Seymour Library in Auburn, will present a slide show and will share
the stories of these portraits and the artist who painted them.
