Dickens Christmas Opens Nov. 26 in Skaneateles

From the world’s smallest Christmas parade to a visit by New York Gov. DeWitt Clinton, lots of surprises are in store

When Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria take up residence in Skaneateles this holiday season, they will be accompanied by a new dignitary—New York Gov. DeWitt Clinton—as the three make their way to this Finger Lakes village via the historic Erie Canal.

The year is 1842. Charles Dickens is gathering research for his soon-to-be-written classic, “A Christmas Carol.” On village streets, he encounters Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Jacob Marley, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and a bevy of other characters.

Magic, music and merriment prevail, as the revels play, visitors ride by in horse–drawn carriages, and improvisational street theater rules the day.

It’s all part of Dickens Christmas, which returns for its 17th year the Friday after Thanksgiving. The production runs noon to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 19, with a limited show (noon to 3 p.m.) Dec. 24.

The family-friendly event—produced by Scarlett Rat Entertainment and sponsored by the Skaneateles-area business community—draws some 20,000 visitors each year. (more…)

Exhibition by Michael DiGiorgio Opens at
Imagine That… Gallery Nov. 5

Nationally recognized nature artist Michael DiGiorgio—known for bird paintings that emphasize the character of the bird and its relationship to the environment—will show his works at Imagine That…, the fine arts and fine craft gallery at 38 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles, throughout the month of November.

The show opens Nov. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., with refreshments and musical entertainment provided.
The event is part of Skaneateles’ First Friday art night.

DiGiorgio, of Madison, Conn., has been painting birds since the age of 5. His paintings and drawings have appeared in a variety of nature books and journals, including “Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil: The Pantanal and Cerrado of Central Brazil,” “The Breeding Bird Atlas of Connecticut and of New York,” “Master’s Guide to Birding,” “Audubon Field Guide to Birds (Eastern and Western Regions),” Audubon Magazine and Audubon Nature Yearbook.

He also has painted numerous covers for Bird Watcher’s Digest and has been featured in Sanctuary magazine, a Massachusetts Audubon publication. Currently, he is illustrating bird plates for “The Birds of South America, Vol. III,” with Robert Ridgely and Guy Tudor.

DiGiorgio won the first-ever endowment award from the Academy of Natural Sciences, in 2004, in recognition of his bird illustration work. The award was given in memory of Don Eckelberry, under whom he studied.

DiGiorgio, whose style reflects his keen observations in the field, is committed to painting from life. He has traveled extensively to create field sketches of birds, plants and habitat from Central America, the West Indies, Trinidad and the Outer Islands of Britain. In addition, numerous trips to the western United States and national parks have allowed him to record a full range of American birdlife.

DiGiorgio holds a master’s degree from Wesleyan University.

Imagine/Imagine That… is located in the lakeside village of Skaneateles, nestled in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York. It offers a distinctive collection of fine and handcrafted jewelry, blown glass, pottery and painting, as well as other unique gifts for special occasions.

The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
