Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat Show Offers Family Fun

Experience the grace and charm of a bygone era, when the historical village of Skaneateles, N.Y., hosts the Antique and Classic Boat Show, July 23-25.

Displays on land and water will feature some 80 preserved and restored wooden boats, ranging from mahogany runabouts manufactured by Chris-Craft, Hacker and Gar Wood in the early 1900s to launches, sailboats, canoes, rowing craft and race boats—many restored to their original condition.

The show, which is expected to draw more than 10,000 visitors, is organized by the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society and the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce, and presented by M&T Bank. Admission is free.

“The Antique and Classic Boat Show is an event we look forward to the entire year,” says Susan Dove, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “With children’s activities, the boat parade, free concerts, historical tours—and shopping and dining opportunities afforded by the village’s unique boutiques, galleries and restaurants—there’s truly something for everyone.”

This is the Finger Lakes Chapter’s 32nd annual show, and the 16th year it has been held in Skaneateles.

Hours are 3 p.m. to dusk Friday, 9 a.m. to dusk Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The event is handicapped accessible.

Program highlights

From 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, as each exhibiting boat approaches the dock, it will be welcomed by a member of the Sea Scouts, blowing his bosun’s whistle.

Judging of the boats, in 20 categories, takes place Saturday morning. Throughout the weekend, visitors to the show will cast their votes for the highly coveted People’s Choice Award, sponsored by Doug’s Fish Fry, which will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Other highlights include:

• A special concert by the 42nd Infantry Band, 4 p.m. Friday

• Music in the Park, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

• Boat parade and fly-by, starting at 3 p.m. Saturday

• Display of antique model boats by the Syracuse Model Boat Club, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

• Guided tours by the Skaneateles Historical Society, starting at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. $10 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Historical Society.

Boat show poster

This year’s commemorative poster is based on a watercolor by Ed Levine, of Sempronious, N.Y., on the south end of Skaneateles Lake, who exhibits at Skaneateles Artisans, the Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery in Canandaigua, and other regional galleries.

“The painting evokes many enjoyable feelings, such as being on a lake viewing the peaceful surroundings and beauty of the watercraft that pass by,” says Levine, in describing the work. “The image of the Roosevelt House clearly defines the setting as Skaneateles Lake.”

Levine is no stranger to antique boating—while growing up, he developed a deep appreciation for the boats’ design and fine craftsmanship from his uncle, who owned a Chris-Craft. Similarly, he says, he fell in love with Skaneateles in the late ‘80s, when he began spending summers on the lake.

The poster will go on sale June 1 for $10 at the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce, 22 Jordan St., and First National Gifts, 2 E. Genesee St. The original artwork will be auctioned off at the show.

Contributing sponsors of the Antique and Classic Boat Show are the Sherwood Inn, Hagerty Insurance and Lisa’s Chart Art. Media sponsors are WRVO-FM, the Scotsman Press, Time Warner Cable and Group M Communications.

Skaneateles_Marcellus Blog

Skaneateles_Marcellus Blog

Ryan Sheridan has started a new community blog to celebrate the villages we live in and share. You can see his first efforts at Skaneateles Marcellus Blog

Ryan says in his opening comments:

“I’ve always wanted to have a true blog…mostly just to be able to say I have one (not because I am a good wordsmith). I guess it’s a lofty goal, but I will strive for people to not only follow the blog on a regular basis, but also use it. And if you knew me, you would know, I do not like to fail.

Heres a few goals and guidelines for the blog:

1-I would like this to be a hub of information for the Marcellus, Skaneateles, and the surrounding areas. A place where people can go to find information on a restaurant, a hiking trail, or even where to find job openings.

2-My hope is that I will be able to get information out on all the restaurants, shops, small businesses, and all other commerce forms in the region, and sort by category to make it extremely easy to use.

3-Mostly, I just hope to be able to write about my experiences in these towns as I realize how much they have shaped my life today. Most likely more therapeutic than interesting. But whatever.

Oh, and the blog is anonymous because it’s not about us, it’s about these towns. Plus, it’s more fun that way.”
