The purpose of Syracuse Opera is to enrich the lives of the people of Upstate New York through locally produced opera, the one all inclusive art form that celebrates the beauty of the human singing voice energized through the spectacle of live theater. Its core values are Artistic Excellence, Integrity and Community Enrichment.
Syracuse Opera is the only year-round professional opera company serving Upstate New York. The company produces three mainstage operas each season and provides year-round outreach and educational programs through the Syracuse Opera Resident Artist Program and Syracuse Opera Ensemble.
The Resident Artist Program was founded in 2008 to provide performing opportunities for emerging artists. Bernard Uzan and Diana Soviero are the Program’s artistic advisors. Resident Artists are selected from competitive national auditions and perform small roles or cover roles in mainstage productions and their own Resident Artist Productions throughout Upstate New York.
Syracuse Opera Ensemble is comprised of local artists who perform throughout the community and also serve as teaching artists.
For mainstage productions, Syracuse Opera hires the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Opera Chorus and performs in the Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater of the Mulroy Civic Center. Noted for high-quality, theatrical productions that star young singing-actors, Syracuse Opera productions have been compared favorably to those of the New York City and Glimmerglass Operas.

Imax_Syracuse_Hurricane
Narrated by Meryl Streep, HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU takes a look at Louisiana before, during and after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The film follows a group of four musicians, both established and rising, as they reveal the thrilling culture of New Orleans. The musicians explore the alligator-filled bayous of Louisiana, recount their personal stories of Katrina and bring focus to the swiftly disappearing wetlands that protect New Orleans from deadly storms.
Originally filmed in 2005, two-time Academy Award ®-nominated director Greg MacGillivray began shooting HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU as a warning about the destruction of Louisiana’s wetlands and the danger that a hypothetical hurricane could bring to the region. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina came to Louisiana and realized the very message MacGillivray was trying to send. The film then became a glimpse into the fury of Katrina and the slow rebuilding process of New Orleans.

Cirque Du Soleil Alegria Syracuse New York
From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has more than 4,000 employees from over 40 different countries, including 1,000 artists.
Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to almost 90 million spectators in over 200 cities on five continents. In 2009, Cirque du Soleil will present 19 shows simultaneously throughout the world. The company has received such prestigious awards as the Emmy, Drama Desk, Bambi, ACE, Gémeaux, Félix, and Rose d’Or de Montreux.
Alegría is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means “jubilation” in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth—it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegría play out their lives. Kings’ fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.
